When it comes to exporting carpets from India, MR Enterprises manages the entire process — from production to port. One of the most common questions we get from buyers considering their first order is: How does the export actually work?

It’s a fair question. Cross-border trade has its own language — FOB, CIF, HS codes, Bill of Lading, GST refund — and if you’ve never imported from India before, it can feel opaque.

This post explains exactly how MR Enterprises handles the export side of every order, what you’re responsible for as the buyer, and what to expect from the time your goods leave our facility to the time they arrive at your warehouse.

Exporting Carpets from India: How We Quote FOB Panipat

All MR Enterprises quotes are on FOB (Free on Board) terms. This means our price covers production of the goods, quality check and packing, inland transport from our facility to the port (ICD Tughlakabad, Delhi or Nhava Sheva, Mumbai), all export formalities and documentation on the Indian side, and loading onto the vessel.

From the moment the goods are on board the vessel, you take over — freight, insurance, destination port charges, customs clearance, and last-mile delivery to your warehouse.

Alternatively, we can quote on CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) terms if you prefer us to arrange shipping. Ask us when requesting a quote.

Export Documentation We Provide

For every export shipment, MR Enterprises provides a full set of documents required for customs clearance in your country:

  • Commercial Invoice — itemised list of goods with unit prices, total value, and HS codes
  • Packing List — detailed breakdown of what’s in each carton or roll, with weights and dimensions
  • Bill of Lading (sea) / Airway Bill (air) — shipping document issued by the freight carrier
  • Certificate of Origin — confirms goods are manufactured in India (required for GSP/trade agreement duty benefits in UK and Australia)
  • GST Export Invoice — confirms zero-rated GST on export goods

If your country or bank requires additional documentation (e.g., for Letter of Credit transactions), we coordinate accordingly.

Freight Options for Exporting Carpets from India: Sea vs. Air

Sea Freight — Standard for Bulk Orders

Sea freight is how the majority of carpet exports move. It’s cost-effective for any order above roughly 100kg, and essential for container-load orders.

Typical transit times from India: US East Coast (New York, Savannah) 18–24 days; US West Coast (Los Angeles, Seattle) 22–28 days; United Kingdom (Felixstowe, Southampton) 20–25 days; Australia (Sydney, Melbourne) 22–30 days; UAE / Middle East 8–12 days; Germany / Netherlands 20–25 days.

For sea freight, we ship from ICD Tughlakabad (Delhi) for most orders, or Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) depending on routing.

LCL vs. FCL: LCL (Less than Container Load) means your goods share a container with other cargo — good for orders under ~10 CBM. FCL (Full Container Load) gives you an exclusive 20ft or 40ft container, cost-effective from ~15+ CBM.

Air Freight — For Samples and Urgent Orders

Air freight is 6–10x more expensive per kg than sea but delivers in 3–5 days door to door. We use air for sample shipments, small urgent orders (under 50kg), and top-up orders where a buyer has run out of stock.

Packing Carpets from India for Export: Methods We Use

  • Rolled and wrapped — rugs are rolled around a cardboard tube, wrapped in plastic sheeting and brown paper, and labelled. Standard for most export shipments.
  • Vacuum packed — for air freight or where cubic volume is a concern. Reduces size significantly.
  • Flat packed in cartons — for smaller items like cushion covers, table runners, or bath mats.
  • Palletised — for larger container shipments. Provides stability during transit.

All packing is done to export standards. We can accommodate specific packing instructions from buyers (retailer labelling requirements, barcode placement, etc.).

Customs Clearance: Your Responsibility as the Buyer

United States

Use a licensed Customs Broker (required for commercial imports). Duty rate for handmade rugs is approximately 4–6% on the FOB value. HS Code: 5703.20 (wool tufted) or 5703.90 (other). ISF (Importer Security Filing) must be submitted 24 hours before vessel departure.

United Kingdom

Use a freight forwarder or customs agent familiar with post-Brexit import procedures. Duty rate: 0–3.7% under UK GSP for India-origin goods (Certificate of Origin required). Import VAT: 20% (reclaimable if VAT registered). EORI number required for the importer.

Australia

Duty rate: 0–5% — significantly reduced or eliminated under the India-Australia ECTA (2022). Certificate of Origin required to claim ECTA benefits. GST: 10% on the landed value. Most Australian freight forwarders handle India shipments routinely.

Total Timeline: Order to Warehouse

Here’s a realistic end-to-end timeline for a standard sea freight order:

Payment Terms When Exporting Carpets from India

Standard terms for new buyers: 30% advance on order confirmation, 70% balance before shipment (after pre-shipment photos and QC confirmation). For established buyers with order history, we can discuss extended terms. For large orders, Letter of Credit (LC) is also accepted.
